I thought it was such a cool list I decided to make my own list.

Lists like these can be a great asset if you are in a keeper or dynasty league for a couple reasons.
1.) you want to have these players going forward if you plan to be competitive year in and year out and
2.) this is often overlooked...if you are in a tight race midway through the year these players make Great trade chips for a struggling owner looking toward the future. You may be able to get the exact piece (or pieces) to help you win now even though it may hinder you going forward. After all, winning is the name of the game!

As mentioned, the guys at Hardball Times each took a shot at it and you can find all of their lists here; Top 25 Players Age 25 and Younger. I definately bounced my thoughts off their list, but you'll find my top 25 is quite a bit different, starting at #1...

My Rank- Player

1- Justin Upton
2- Clayton Kershaw
3- King Felix (Hernandez)
4- Mike Stanton
5- Stephen Strasburgh
6- Brett Lawrie
7- Carlos Santana
8- Andrew McCutchen
9- Eric Hosmer
10- Desmond Jennings
11- Bryce Harper
12- Mike Trout
13- Matt Moore
14- Jay Bruce
15- Simon Castro
16- Jason Heyward
17- Michael Pineda
18- Yu Darvish
19- Pablo Sandoval
20- Jesus Montero
21- Mike Moustakas
22- Madison Bumgarner
23- Buster Posey
24- Yovani Gallardo
25- Matt Wieters

As you can see (and as is the theme with most of my lists) I tend to value hitters higher than pitchers. I also give slight increases to guys who have done it in the majors even though I have very little doubt that Trout and Harper will be just fine.

Here's a list (in no particular order) of guys who just missed the cut;

Ackley

Andrus
Avila
Beachy
Belt
D Gordon
Pujols is gone. Now that that’s out of the way, lets get
into the team that won the 2011 World Series. It’s still a solid team that made
some quality signings. Beltran was a great move. I know Allen Craig had a great
end of the year and playoffs, but I feel he’s better suited as a 4th
outfield rather then your starting right-fielder. It makes the outfield 4
quality guys deep. Furcal was another
move that needed to be made. He’s not what he used to be, but he’s still better
then any internal option St. Louis
had. I’ve been following David Freese for a few years, and I gotta say, when he
came up huge in that World Series I had a big smile on. Freese has got some
talent, but he’s just so injury prone! I really hope 2012 will be his year
because he’s got talent. After a very weak year from Holliday, Wainwright, a Cy
Young candidate every year, and the bullpen solidified, this team has a enough
talent to make another deep run in the playoffs. And to top it all off, St. Louis has one of the

I found it refreshing to look at the Hall of Fame discussions from a different angle, rather than discussing the same players over and over year after year. Anyway, his analysis can be found here Active Players Headed to Cooperstown. I highly recommend it.
Anyway, I thought I'd put my own list together really quick. I appologize up front as I did about 15 minutes of research prior to making this list. Anyway, check it out and let me know who I'm missing (or who I'm crazy to include).
there are many more on this list, but I thought these three had enough 'in the bank' already and are young enough to do much more damage. That may seem like a lot, but considering we're almost into the new year, that number is actually suprisingly low. Still, that means that there are a handful of quality players left for teams (and fans) to add to their New Years wish lists. Obviously topping the list is Prince Fielder, who I would expect to sign in the next week or so, but there are also some solid SP (Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda, Roy Oswalt) and a top closer in Ryan Madson left for the highest bidders.

In the MLB Trade Rumors contest I've correctly guessed 5 of the 32 free agent destinations. Sounds pretty terrible (it's not good), but the leader out of thousands of entries has only guessed right on 12.

That said, I thought it'd be fun to take a look back and take another shot at the remaining 18 Free Agents. Some I've changed for obvious reason and others I've left as is. You can check out my new picks by clicking on the pictures below;
It was a lot of fun and took about 3 weeks to complete. The majority of the owners were around to make each and every pick (thanks!). There will be a number of posts coming over the next couple weeks analyzing the draft (which teams look the best, the worst, what positions may be shallower than you think, who are some of the late sleeper picks, etc.), but since the draft is now complete I'd like to share the results for you to look over. The link below will take you to a spreadsheet. Sheet 1 shows each and every pick in order and Sheet 2 outlines each teams complete rosters.

With 14 teams, drafting 16 positions and with an 8 hour time limit for picks I thought it would take us well into the new year. That is not the case as we are already into the 10th round. You can follow our draft here; BleacherGM Slow Mock Draft or read about the format and participants here http://www.bleachergm.com/2011/12/bleachergms-2012-fantasy-baseball-slow.html;
Analysis

It is clear to me that it is going to be very important to get as much offense as possible early in the draft while also guarding yourself from risk as much as possible. This is probably why Verlander (pitcher) received the most negative rating and no other pitchers were taken in round 1. Position scarcity also played a key role. 2B, SS and 3B look to be very shallow this year and if you're able to lock down those positions with top performers you'll be in good shape later in the draft.

for some great pick by pick analysis, keep reading!

My Pick - At pick #12 I was happy to have a couple options fall to me. In the first couple rounds I like to draft offense with a heavy emphasis on power. The players I considered here were Justin Upton, Prince Fielder and Mark Teixeira. I figured if I drafted Upton I would get a true 5 tool star whose best years may still be ahead of him. I also knew Upton wouldn't last until my next pick (5 picks later), but that Fielder or Teixeira might.

G4LBP28- With the first overall selection I want someone who is gonna fill up the stat sheet. Kemp is the one who does that best seeing as Pujols is not likely to steal more than 10. Also, I am preparing for a dynasty draft this upcoming season so I'm usually going to select the younger player in all the mock drafts i'll take part in. Other players I considered: Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera

askROTObaseball- I happily took Albert Pujols with the #2 overall pick. In my opinion, he's still the top overall fantasy player and I look for a HUGE year in his first season with the Angels. You can't beat consistency and with Pujols you know what you're going to get. Now if only he would have only played 3 more games at 3B and gained eligibility at the hot corner, I'd really be in business!
RepLevel- Tulowitzki was at the top of my board all along. He may not guarantee six wins like Cabrera or Votto, but he stands out among his positional peers more than anyone else in the game.

Nash- I was pleasantly surprised to have Joey Bats fall to me at 4, I would have selected him first overall had I had the pick. He will put up similar numbers to the 3 big 1Bs Pujols, Miggy and Gonzo, but Bautista does it at 3B.
RepLevel on Bautista- For what it's worth, I had Bautista outside the top ten. I think she should have been the AL MVP in '11, but the sharp drop on his power numbers midseason seemed to correspond with the league catching on to the Jays' sign stealing. He'll walk a ton and probably hit 30 homers again, and I see the fantasy value of his third base eligibility, but in the real world, he's a weak defensive right fielder and a weaker defensive third baseman who can't possibly repeat his 2011 offensive numbers
manninj2 on Bautista- I disagree with that Bautista assessment completely going into the 2012 season. Now if you were making this argument going into the 2011 season, I'd agree with you. " [Bautista] can't possibly repeat his 2011 offensive numbers." Why not? He's done it 2 years (probably closer to 2.5) in a row now, it's time to start believing, and with power becoming harder to find, Bautista's value is that much greater. I view Beltre similarly. He's also done it now 2 years in a row, but people never seem to bring his name up about "can't possibly repeat his 2011 offensive numbers" . If you believe in 1, you gotta believe in both, right?

FS Dirt- Love Votto; took him third in my mixed league last year. He plays in a great park, plays everty day and is a lock for a .300 BA. The drop in his power stats from '10 to '11 not a concern at all, as long as the BA was there. Very happy with the pick, although I was clicking my heels for Joey Bats; still the most underrated player in the game.
manninj2 on Votto- In addition to Votto's fall, the whole team played below expectations. I'm predicting a much better year, not only for Votto, but the whole Reds team.
fantasynomad on Votto- That's a bold statement w/ all the great things that happened this off season to other NL Central teams :)

DroppedStrike3- Tough one here as my gut was telling me to look at a 5 tool guy, but i promised myself that this year aside from Pujols, Miguel Cabrera would be the only other 1st Baseman that I would reach for in the first round. I don't think anyone else in baseball is such a lock for 30+ HRs, 100+ RBI, contends for a batting title and above all stays healthy. Where you can argue against small sample sizes, increasing age, or declining health for a lot of hitters of the Cabrera mold, this guy's production is as consistent as it comes and the numbers are a sure thing.
skipper24- My first pick of the draft was a no brainer for me. I was pleased to see Adrian Gonzalez fell to the 8th pick. He's a top tier first basement that can work the count with the best. I don't have specific stats in front of me, but he continuously hangs with the top first basemen of the league. With a new coach gonig to boston, i look for more production out of all the red sox hitters. I don't feel the laxidazical numbers from the superstar lineup continuing through twenty-twelve. i.e. Carl Crawford and the entire pitching staff.
AATH_Baseball- There were only three guys in 2011 to collect 100 runs, 100 RBI, 30 HR, and 30 stolen bases while also posting a batting average of .300 or better: Matt Kemp, Ryan Braun, and Jacoby Ellsbury. Kemp was taken in the first round and no one is going to touch Braun this early when he may have to serve a 50 game suspension, so there was little hesitation when I chose Ellsbury. I don't foresee him maintaining the disposition as a 30/30 guy, but would be happy with a 20/40 season. He's practically a knack for 100 RBIs and runs as long as he is healthy in a Red Sox uniform.
rytwin- Verlander So my thinking for my first pick is, Oops! I slept through it. I much prefer to have NL pitchers, and I usually don't like to draft pitchers so high. Prince Fielder would have been my pick had I been there
BleacherGM- While a slow mock draft can be a lot of fun, these are the dangers. Not everyone can be there all the time and things come up which may make it possible to get to a computer (even with an 8 hour time-limit).

FBCrackerjacks- First, 14 is a lot for a snake draft. If you come in at 12-14 at lot of elite talent is off the board. Picking at 13, for sake of argument, I'm going to call it a wrap-around pick and count both as one pick. Being that there is approximately 400,000 picks between me and my 3rd round pick I wanted to make sure I was thinking 5 tool. Pedroia does it all at a shallow position and the park in which Granderson plays couldn't but more suited to his strengths. He'll find that short right porch a million times next season. Again, picking so late I wanted contributions in all stats. If you look at Pedroia and Granderson as the sum of their contribution a conservative estimate is a .280 AVG (thankfully Pedroia brings up Granderson's AVG), well over 200 runs (remember, Granderson led MLB in runs last year), close to 60 or more home runs (hello, short right porch and Green Monster), over 200 RBIs, and probably 50 steals. I needed that sort of across the board production to build off, drafting so late in a snake draft.

FantasyNomad- As much as people say they love, or rather be towards the bottom of the draft order, it still can be frustrating as you sit in wait, especially in a 14 team draft, for your pick to come. You sit and wait, and wait, and wait the whole time watching big time talent fall off the board as heyou stare at the computer wishing and hoping that the next guy you want is still there when it is finally your pick. As expected, the players I wanted must were gone by the time it was my pick. What was really frustrating was that two of my targeted players went right before my pick, of course. As I watched Dustin Pedroia and Justin Upton grabbed just out my grasp. So, I decided go with Carlos Gonzalez. I chose Cargo over Reyes, even though both players have their injury issues, because Cargo provides big time numbers in every category, where as Reyes provides stats primarily in only three of the four offense categories. Another thing that factor into my decision to skip over Reyes is that history seems to show that when players change teams they most often seem to regress, or struggle to put up numbers similar to their previous year’s totals. Going back just to last year the list of offensive players that changed teams, who struggled, seems endless (unless they went to the Rangers): Crawford, Dunn, Werth, Carlos Pena, VMart (HR totals), to name a few.

Like I said, it's been a lot of fun thus far and we have a great group of passionate fantasy baseball fans. Stay tuned for the 2nd round results and analysis!Jeff Furtahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15861881717386956844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7627358513768364561.post-8462789133235217442011-12-16T13:28:00.000-05:002011-12-16T13:28:05.209-05:00Fantasy Baseball Starting Pitchers To Target

For you fantasy vets, it’s all about the 70/30,
hitters/pitchers, split when auction drafting. I do it; everyone in my league
just about does it, or a variation thereof. So should we buck the trend and go
for top tier starters while everyone else avoids them? Probably, but whatever,
I’m set in my ways. Anyway, when waiting on drafting pitching, it’s all about
finding your Aladdin, the diamond in the rough (Disney reference). After a few
years of drafting this way, or variations, I’ve really perfected finding my Aladdin. Anyone in my fantasy league (Bruce, Steve, Roddy, etc.) go ahead and
stop reading now so I still have an advantage come draft day……ok, now that they
are gone here we go.

First, for those that are new to drafting, especially in
auctions, a 70/30 split is the amount of money you spend on hitters vs.
pitchers. Typical auction leagues start with a $260 budget to spend on your
team. Using the 70/30 split that means you will spend roughly $182 on your
hitters and $78 on pitching. This is
done because hitters, especially your 5-tool and power guys will cost more, and
most, me included, feel pitching is very deep and front line starter can be
found later in the draft. Having said that, now here we go….

Looking at pitchers, their value can vary significantly from
year to year, especially when Wins is a category. 1 W can change a pitchers
perceptive value greatly, which is why the underlying numbers are the best to
look at. Add to that the fact that starting pitchers do not contribute to 1 of the 5 pitching categories, saves. Since most of you don’t have time to look at this stuff and do your own
research, I do have the time (loser? Yes, but I’ve accepted it), so that’s why
we are here. Anyhow, one major category, strikeouts (Ks), is a great starting
point to find your Aladdin.

Looking down the list, you see a lot of the usual culprits.
Most are the top tier guys we aren’t going for, so we need to dive deeper
*splash* into the numbers to find who we’re targeting. Those numbers are BB/9,
HR/9, BABIP, and HR/FB. We’re looking at these numbers because they will tell
us a little tale about which pitcher got unlucky in 2011. This is where the best value lies. Guys that should have done much better in 2011, but because they got unlucky or had a bad year, their "stock" has taken a hit in 2012, so they'll be available later in drafts. Based on the average
of the top 26 strikeout pitchers in MLB, here’s the bar I set:

BB/9 < 2.67 – tells me they are not walking an excessive
amount of batters

HR/9 > 0.82 – getting unlucky and giving up the long ball
too excessively

BABIP > 0.289 – getting unlucky with extra balls finding
holes (hehe) and becoming hits

LOB% < 74.7% - not being able to strand guys that get on
base. Which makes sense if balls are flying over the fence, or finding holes
and going for hits.

HR/FB > 9.3% - confirming that they are not making that
“key pitch”, or balls are flying out at an unlucky/excessive rate

Here’s the list of SPs to target in drafts

First and foremost, grabbing an “ace” in round 4 is not a bad
idea; someone to anchor your staff, especially if it’s a pitcher that has the
potential to generate 1st-2nd round numbers. Also,
grabbing that “ace” in round 4 allows you to wait till, according to my
list, round 11 and/or later, but if
you’re not about to grab a SP that early, then there are at least guys later on
that are projected to outperform their Average Draft Position (ADP). This could allow you to spend even less on pitching.

2011 In A Nutshell:

It was truly a magical year for the Brew-Crew. One that GM
Doug Melvin has been building up to since CC Sabathia carried the Brew-Crew to
the playoffs with one arm in 2008. With very calculated, necessary trades made
before the 2011 season Melvin positioned the Brew-Crew very nicely, and loaded
up the rotation with solid starters that ran 4 deep (Greinke, Gallardo, Marcum,
and Wolf). He knew he had the power/speed to keep up with the big boys in hitting,
so he had to dump the farm, literally, on getting Grienke and Marcum. Two moves
that were widely criticized, but two moves I felt very necessary. Fielder was
gone after the 2011 season, which meant Melvin had to make 2011 the season to
go for it! Mid-market and small-market teams have a small window to compete for
the World Series that don’t come around often, so when it does, they have to go
for it. I applaud Melvin for going for it. Although the Brewers came up short, it was still a
great season that netted the a MVP, a MVP candidate, a division win, and a deep
playoff run. Along with T-Plush.

Along with Fielder, he took the Brewers deep into the playoffs. He was supposed
to be the beacon that propelled us out of the thought that every time a player
performed extremely well he was on a PED. Now that’s tarnished. Add to that
Prince Fielder leaving, and it makes for a bleak, depressing 2012 for the
Brew-Crew. *FLASH* “Wait, what was that?! Was it a Chorizo? Was it a frosty
Miller Lite?! No it’s….oh…it’s Aramis Ramirez. (sarcastically) woo-hoo.” That’s

that’s what ya got! With those 2 manning the left side, and Gamel taking over
at 1B, this still is team that can compete, especially with that rotation and
bullpen. Gamel is projected to be a 25HR, .290 BA player, and I think A-Ram can
match that. As long as the Brewers stay competitive, and I think they will, while
Braun serves his 50 game suspension (I know I’m jumping the gun, but I’m
assuming he’s guilty) they can make a serious push at winning the division
again.

We’ve assembled a great group of fantasy baseball enthusiasts, each with varying levels of experience. Over the next couple weeks we’ll each draft a full roster for the 2012 season. I know it is very early, but it should be interesting to see how the draft positions of players change from last year and start to get a feel for which positions will be the most shallow, who will be this year’s ‘sleepers’ and just how far Ryan Braun falls due to the very real possibility that he’ll miss a significant amount of time to start the season.

Anyway, here are the rules. We will draft 16 positions; C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, UT, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P and use the basic 5x5 Roto scoring statistics; R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, W, S, K, ERA, WHIP. You can follow our draft by going to http://www.couchmanagers.com/mock_drafts/?draftnum=19013.

Throughout the draft we’ll have each team give thoughts on their picks. At the end of the draft we’ll use some preliminary projections to crown a champion of BleacherGM’s inaugural Mock Draft. Without further ado, here are the teams;

Skipper24
Kyle Furtah is a devout Detroit Tigers fan. His baseball history includes, but is not limited to, junior college pitcher and current varsity coach for Fitzgerald High School. He doesn’t have a strategy for fantasy drafts unless drinking beer while drafting is considered a strategy.

FS Dirt
Eddie Mayrose launced FantasySportsDirt.com just three years ago as part of his transition from a Wall St. career to one as a writer/sports personality. During the baseball season, he does a regular Sunday spot with Craig Mish on SiriusXM’s Fantasy Sports Channel. He has been a fantasy baseball player since 1988 and is a diehard Met’s fan (with the scars to prove it).

FantasyNomad
Michael Pichan is the host of the Rotoinfo.com Fantasy Nomad and Fantasy Baseball shows. His podcasts can be found at Rotoinfo.com with the Blog Talk Radio (BTR) widget near the bottom of the page. He regularly discusses fantasy sports so give him a listen. He’s interested in discussing any/all draft strategies (even if they may be as off the wall as Kyle’s above). You can find him on twitter @FantasyNomad

G4LBP28
Jon McMahon is 25 years old and has been playing fantasy baseball for about 6 years now. He is involved with the Full Count Dynasty league which includes 26 teams, full major and minor league rosters and year round action including drafts, free agency, trades, etc.

AATH_Baseball
Ryan Sendek is part of Cardinal Nation, though he grew up as a Pirates fan near Pittsburgh. He first played fantasy baseball when he created, maintained and managed his own league at just 10 years old! He’s used to finishing in the top 3 in his leagues, but he’s become a little rusty and hasn’t finished as high over the past couple years. His twitter account is @AATH_Baseball.

RepLevel
Bryan O’Connor of Replacement Level Baseball Blog is a huge baseball fan; though not a huge fantasy fan (he goes out of his way never to look at RBI totals). Plans to conduct his draft by choosing the players he’d want on a real baseball team, meaning more Mike Napoli and less Michael Young.

askROTObaseball
David Kerr is 26, married w/ 2 kids and writes the blog, askrotobaseball.wordpress.com. He’s been playing fantasy baseball for 10 years and it is a great passion of his. His goal is to one day become a fantasy baseball expert and run his own fantasy baseball website. Can be reached on twitter @askrotobaseball.

rytwin
Ryan Drost is an identical twin. He and his twin write about the Minnesota Twins for twinsontwins.blogspot.com. He is probably the staunchest Joe Mauer supporter, one of the relatively few who did not turn on him this year, and will try to resist drafting him in the first round.

TribeBball
Jerry Smalls is a die hard Cleveland Indians fan. So much so that he decided to start his own blog at tribebball.blogspot.com and twitter account @TribeBball, however neither of them really took off. He still enjoys rooting for the Tribe and can be found at the 'Jake' often to take in a game.

FBCrackerjacks
Clave, years ago, won the first fantasy baseball league he participated in and that sweet taste of victory unleashed an obsession inside him. The following year he gathered 14 of his friends together and began the TunaCorn Fantasy Baseball League, a 7×7 roto league that is still humming along. He’ll often write about the lessons learned at fantasybaseballcrackerjacks.com. His wife is awesome and he has two little girls that don’t like baseball as much as they like dressing up as princesses.

Nash
Nash is an avid sports fan that hails from California by way of Minnesota where he continues to cheer for his beloved A's and Giants. He is not opposed to trying any form of fantasy baseball once but Roto is far and away his favorite. Nash can be read at fantasybaseballcrackerjacks.com.

manninj2
Jeremy Manning is a co-founder of Bleachergm.com. He is currently involved in 3 fantasy baseball leagues, 2 of which have been around for a combined total of 30+ years! His life is fantasy baseball which, he says, is sad but comforting. His twitter account is @manninj2. He can be reached there or at the BleacherGM chat box with any questions.

BleacherGM
I’m Jeff Furtah, co-founder of BleacherGM.com. I’m 29 years old and married with a 2 year old daughter. I work a ton, but in between family and work I also love baseball. In 2011 I worked with MLB as a stat stringer in Cleveland (Go Tribe!). I’m also a Michigan State alumni and love watching the Spartans (Go Green!). I want to thank everyone for being involved with the draft and look forward to a couple weeks/months of fun.
2011 started off great. Josh Johnson was looking very
CY-ish, Hanley was sluggish, but it’s HanRam, he’ll come around! The young kids
were producing. Things were going good! Random Marlins fan, “alright! 2011
looks great! We’re going to sneak up on everyone and take the East.” Then the
All-Star break (if not sooner) hit. The wheels fell off, or should I say
HanRam’s back fell apart. Johnson’s arm fell to pieces, LoMo couldn’t find the
ball because he eyes were focused elsewhere *cough*Twitter*cough*, and there
were just too many other holes to fill. There were certainly bright spots, Stanton proved he’s going
to be a beast, and Bonifacio proved he’s a gamer. Although the Marlins’ final
stats (hitting/pitching) finished in the middle of the NL pack, there were some
underlying numbers there that showed these fish have a chance to cause some
havoc in 2012.

2 Words. 1 name. Jose Reyes. This guy is a game changer.
He’s what a leadoff hitter should be. He’ll net you 50+SBs, hitting you well
over .300, poke a few HRs to keep the outfielders honest, crush you 30+
doubles, and add 15+ triples. Beast Mode Activated. I don’t care about his
injury history. I don’t. Almost everyone comes with baggage. I mean, look at
Sir Albert. El Hombre. People were so desperate to find something, anything
wrong with the guy! They were looking at
WAR, age (is he 31? Is he a south American 31 which means 40?), anything! Look
at what he’s doing! Pujols, despite being hurt still put up MVP numbers. But I
digress, Reyes is a stud, and will change the Marlins for the better. The
“other guy”, some dude named Hanley, keeps complaining about shifting to
3B…Dude, get over it! Players better then you, players that are in the hall of
fame, or soon will be, have made the exact same shift you have. Sit back, field
some extra grounders, enjoy the fact there’s uber-talent around you, and shut
up. Ok, now that that’s over with, I like this Marlins team a lot! LoMo (sans
Twitter), Stanton, Buehrle (like this signing a lot. Little too much
years/money IMO, but the market dictated it), and Bell (forgot the mention they picked up a
nice closer here. I’m never really a fan of overpaying for saves, too much
history proving that a closer can be found almost anywhere, but still it’s nice
to have a solid guy finishing up games) make up a very talented core. It’s just
too bad they’re in the east, because I like Atlanta (Hot-lanta), and obviously Philly
too. 2012 is going to be one exciting NL East year.

If the Yanks don't get Gio, Wandy, or Danks they are fools! I get holding on to top level prospects, but at some point they gotta bolster up that staff. CC is a formidable #1, an ace, but after they it's nothing but question marks. No clue what they'll get from Hughes, Nova, Garcia, and/or Burnett. It's arguable they lost in the 2011 playoffs due to lack of pitching, so why not pull a page from the Yankees of old, buy the top level free agent, Wilson, and trade for a young starting pitcher, Danks/Gonzalez. That'll make them 3 deep, with some high upside guys (I know I ripped Hughes/Nova earlier, but them as #4/5 SPs is a lot better then #2/3 SPs) at the back of the rotation.

If you read the new CBA, starting in 2014 teams over the luxury tax will be 'punished' more than they have in the past. I think the Yankees will always have the top Payroll, but it may come down quite a bit from the $200M territory. That makes a 6 yr deal for (in my opinion) over-rated <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Wilson</place></city> or 4 yr deal for an aging Buehrle more gamble than it's worth. As far as trades go, many think Banuelos and/or Betances could be just as good as Gio/Danks in the very near future and their lineup is aging quickly so a 22 yr old with all the tools to be a Great ML hitter is important to 2012 as well as their future. I think they will add a SP or two, but they may wait till the next tier of Free Agents or the asking price comes down a little for their prospects. Or maybe they make a deal for Gio and sign Darvish. At this point there's so much posturing and rumors, but history has shown you know the Yankees will be involved.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7627358513768364561.post-64727084106407745302011-12-06T12:35:00.001-05:002011-12-06T12:38:57.591-05:00NY Mets 2012 Offseason Preview
Jose Reyes was the batting title champion. That’s basically it. Everything else was pretty much forgettable. Like David Wright’s injury plagued season. Ike Davis going down for the year. <place w:st="on"><placename w:st="on">Jason</placename> <placename w:st="on">Bay</placename></place>…who? Angel Pagan’s constant determination to prove why he should NOT be an everyday starter. Johan Santana not playing at all, which is basically the story for every other pitcher the Mets trotted out there. All in all, just a crappy year to be a Mets fan. However, I will point out that the Mets did have a solid hitting year ranking 2nd in the NL in AVG and OBP.

It’s got to get better, right? Bay has to start hitting, Wright and Davis can’t be hurt for that long, and I like what Lucas Duda, and Daniel Murphy showed me in 2011…great roles players! Unfortunately there’s still not much power hitting, and their bullpen is a mess. The staff’s dreadfulness has been well documented, so no need to delve into that. This is a team in shamb…I mean rebuild mode. It also doesn’t help that your franchise shortstop went south for multiple winters, and your other franchise cornerstone is starting to pack his bags. What I think? The Mets do trade Wright, but closer to the July deadline. They get an everyday CF like Bourjos or Span, a top tier SP, and a highly ranked IF prospect in return. Look, this is a team that’s years away from contending, and all the major pieces they got the past few years to go for the title didn’t work, so why hang on to 1? They have a couple decent pieces in Davis, Duda, Turner, and Murphy, but these are not studs, they are guys you surround with multiple All-Stars. Once the owner situation is straightened out, trade Wright, plan out what they are doing after the 2012 season, they have a lot to look forward. One major bright spot is in 2012, their payroll drops $100mil, and even less the following years, which means once the ball is rolling, they have plenty of money to sign some cornerstone free agents.

A nice bright spot is the farm system. In addition to trading Beltran and acquiring Wheeler, the Mets do have some talented prospects poised to break through in the next year or 2.

The MLB Winter Meetings are one of my favorite times of the year. Many of the Free Agents below will sign new contracts, some players will be traded and fans will start to get a glimps of what their favorite team will look like in 2012. About a month ago I 'predicted' where each of the top 50 FA's would sign (since this exercise Y Cespedes could also be added). While I've already missed on some (only 3/12 correct so far) and I'd like to make some changes to others I'll stick by my original list and see how many I get right.
I switched so many names around so many times I finally had to stop, flip the rankings the bird, and let you guys be the judge. I took a lot into consideration:
Our last update was completed in September and there have been some developments since. I've also had the opportunity to participate in a couple mock drafts. It's become very apparant that offense (especially power) is going to be hard to come by. Filling your 3B, 2B and SS positions with players that produce at an elite level is going to be the key in 2012. Anyway, here are the rankings. Please let me know what you think in the comments. Who's ranked too high, too low? Do you see any trends to monitor?

As you can see I've started to add more detail, I'll continue to add detail throughout the offseason to hopefully make this your go-to list heading into draft season.
You have to admit, overall, 2011 wasn’t that bad a year, if you can get past the monumental collapse at the end (“thank you <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Boston</place></city> for taking all the heat of us” – Braves fan). But come on! You lost to the eventual World Series Champs. That’s says something right? Anyway, getting into the team…after a disastrous what seemed like forever slump from Dan Uggla, he proved to be worth it. There’s a great young core with Freeman, Kimbrel, Venters, and pretty much the entire pitching staff. McCann is a rock, and I truly believe Heyward will catch a bit of the Rocky II, and go all Eye Of The Tiger on the league next year; too much talent there. Also, a full season with a true lead-off hitter, Bourn, will really prove to be worth its weight in gold.

With all the rumors swirling about trading Martin Prado, it's hard for me to believe the Braves will. He's extremely versatile, and at this point, you have to assume Chipper is going to miss 40-60% of his games. They'd have to get blown away to trade Prado. Now, the one thing to keep an eye on his the resigning of Bourn. He made a huge impact when he played in <place w:st="on"><city w:st="on">Atlanta</city></place>, and they really like him, so I doubt he'll be going anywhere. Jason Heyward is a curious case. He was just plain awful in 2011, but the exact opposite in 2010. I don't see Constanza taking too much of Heyward's time in the beginning, but Constanza will play, especially when Chipper goes down. Now I went 7 deep in the rotation because that's what <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Atlanta</place></city> can run out there, 7 solid starters. With Hudson and Jurrjens having injury issues, the real ace his Hanson, but the one to watch is Beachy. With serious K-rates, he's got some nasty stuff, and a Cy Young future. The only "hole" I see is SS, but the way the Atlanta front office is talking, they really like their young guys, and want to give them a real shot, especially Pastornicky. Why not, <place w:st="on"><city w:st="on">Atlanta</city></place> has always been known for the keen eye, so I'll back their decision!

With the recent promotions of their top guys, the system looks a lot worse then it really is. Ranking in the bottom half of all major hitting categories really hurt the Braves down the stretch, but ranking in the top half of all the major pitching categories means there isn't any main concerns (al la 2010 San Francisco Giants). Having bounce back years from Prado and Heyward, along with a full season with Bourn is what the Braves are really counting on the drive them into the playoffs. And why not? These are guys that have shown flashes of great baseball. Combine those comebacks with the professional play of McCann/Jones/Uggla, and growth from Freeman and the pitching staff, and this is a serious World Series contender. I don't see any major singings or moves this offseason, or at the trade deadline. Most will be filled internally, or with small signings. Overall, I really like what I see. Dangerous.
2011 In A Nutshell:

Well, the Phillies had the season everyone thought they would. 3 potential Cy Young pitchers, a sweet 102 win regular season, a division title, and postseason birth. However, the ending didn’t quite go as planned. Coming up short, and not getting to the World Series was a huge disappointment to the Phillies, and their fans alike. For most teams, the Phillies’ 2011 season would be a great one, but the Phillies’ aren’t most teams. 2011 was an odd year…you could see they were a dominate team, yet, you could also see they had a huge weakness. Hitting. Ranking in the middle of the pack in all major hitting categories (OBP, SLG, OPS) no-one feared them. Even after the trade for Hunter Pence they were still beatable. With little production from Catcher, 2B, Leftfield, and Centerfield (some in part due to injuries), one could see the foundation falling. Even still, it was a great season for <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Philadelphia</place></city>, and unlike mid-market & low-market teams, the Phillies don’t have to rebuild, they get to reload for 2012!

2012 Issues/Targets:

Luckily the core of the Phillies’ hitters are locked up for next year; Utley, Howard, Pence, Polanco, and Victorino. As is the big 3; Halladay, Lee, and Hamels. With close to $50mil coming off the books, and really only 1 big arbitration case to figure out, the Phillies have some money to spend, and it looks like not only will they spend it on a closer, Papelbon, but they’re also going for a LF. With absolutely no production coming from Ibanez for what seems like 50 years, I’ll bet the Phils are anxious to fill his spot with something, which leads me to think they’ll grab 1 of Cuddyer, Sizemore, or Beltran. Along with getting a solid bat in left, another high priority will be re-signing Jimmy Rollins. Yes I know his production is waning, and he’s not the same guy that won the MVP back in 2008, but have you seen what else is out there?! Yeesh! Makes too much sense not to bring him back. Here’s what I think the Phillies’ lineup will look like in 2012:
